Daily life at Matemwe is much regulated by the moon and the tides. The lagoon and coastline have much to offer in their own right. A discussion on having our own swimming pool rages on, but at the same time we believe that activities at low tide supply our guests with lots of opportunities to discover our direct environment in a different way. |
|
At Matemwe, besides bike rides on the endless beach and reef walks through the lagoon to the roaring ocean just outside the fringing reef we have added a new and environmental friendly toy: THE KAYAK! Matemwe Bungalows was built to offer you a perfect mix of relaxation and excitement. |

The rural north-east coast of Zanzibar is well-known for its fine weather and natural beauty. That's why we call it the Sunny Side of Paradise. After years of loving care the garden of Matemwe Bungalows forms a small oasis in this otherwise dry scrub bush land. |
|
Enjoy the contrasting colours of the Indian Ocean, the fine powder sand of the beach, the extreme beauty of the coral reef and the wild bush vegetation. At Matemwe meet the friendly villagers, visit the local fish market and explore the ocean reefs on your doorstep. You can leave your watch at home, the sun and moon are clocks enough in Matemwe. |

Forget about work. Just relax and fall apart in our backyard! Ocean Life- Big fish - and we mean BIG fish - have arrived again in the ocean in front of us. At present not a day passes by when whale sharks or humpback whales are not spotted. |
|
Half a year ago a ten-meter sperm whale beached itself on the reef supplying the villagers with much needed food for many days and oil used for preservation of their boats, leaving behind a fantastic skeleton, which is now on display in our garden. |

Emails and faxes are confined to our office in Stone Town. Television just didn't make it into Paradise. Local sites are suitable
for all levels of experience from beginner to advanced. Variety is the
key word on the reefs around Matemwe.
Soft and hard corals, sponges and anemones abound, and wether you are a total novice, snorkeler or keen diver, you will be amazed by the sheer range of fish species to be found in these waters. |
|
Tide- For the more experienced divers explore the reef with our DPV (diving propulsion vehicle) or simply come along as a snorkler to see the sight of wild dolphins, trying to impress you swimming and jumping next to the boat.As at low tide boats can’t enter or leave the lagoon our dive times are changing every day. At low tide the shallow waters make the perfect time to explore the lagoon by walking along the intertidal pathway or explore the coastline from your own kayak. |

Matemwe Bungalows- The north-east part of the island of Unguja (one of the two main islands of Zanzibar), near the coast of Tanzania, is known as Matemwe.Matemwe Bungalows is open 10 months of the year. In July the weather is cool and windy, the winds dropping steadily during August. By November it is generally calm and pleasantly hot. The short rains fall late November / early December and help us keep the garden green. This can be an ideal time to visit Matemwe Bungalows as it is low season and usually quiet. In 'winter', the weather is hot and dry with a cool sea breeze. April brings heavy rains and the hotel closes after Easter for two months. |
