serengeti national park   simply the greatest area 14,763 sq. km

The Serengeti National Park is by common consent the best known and greatest wildlife sanctuary in the world.

The name comes from the Maasai 'siringet' which means 'endless plains', and the Serengeti is just that.

This is one of the world's last great wildlife sanctuaries.

Within Serengeti's boundaries of "endless plains" are more than three million mammals.
About 35 species of animals can be seen here, including the so called "big five:" elephants, rhinos, lions
(more than 2,000 of them), leopards, and buffalo. Huge herds of wildebeest, gazelle & zebra are popular
for their spectacular migrations.

A Day in the Serengeti

Serengeti's park's terrain is varied: the vast treeless central Serengeti Plains, savannah dotted with acacia trees, magnificent rock outcrops called kopjes, reverie bush, thick scrub to streams, rivers, small swamps and lakes. These features give the Serengeti Park a fascinating variety of habitats.

Survey estimates indicate more then 3000 lions, 1,600,000 wilder beasts and 500,000 zebras. There are more then 400 bird species.

Arguably the best and greatest wildlife sanctuaries in the world, the Serengeti projects nature in its wildest, most exotic form. The sweeping plains have been declared a 'World Heritage Site'; about 35 species of plains animals including the 'big 5' are found here. Of the 3 million large animals, most take part in the seasonal migration, a most sensational sight.

It is from here that the famous army of grazing wildebeest begins its legendary trek in search of new

grazing lands. Other common species found here include hippo, giraffe, eland, impala and other antelope
types, baboons, monkeys and a profusion of almost 500 bird species.

Within Serengeti's 14,763 square kilometers (5,000 square mile) dwell an estimated 3 million large animals.

The best time to see heavy concentration of game is between January and February. Life on the Serengeti is

a complex cycle, the defining factor of which is the rain. Though the precise timing varies each year,  it

usually occurs around May.

The columns of herbivores stretch up to forty kilometers long (25 miles ) as they make their way up north

toward Kenya's Maasai Mara from where they eventually return some eight and a half months later.

Packs of wild dog usually follow, preying on the sick and weak.

Cheetah, lion, leopard and hyenas can be frequently spotted at a kill but more so in the Seronera Valley
which is characterized by an amazing abundance of mainly lion and leopard.
Often rock hyrax can be spotted on granite mounds on the plains they burrow close to these small
outcroppings keeping a watchful eye out for several cat and jackal.
Serengeti literally translates into ‘Endless’ Plains. The expensive savannah is the stage for one of the most awe-inspiring shows on earth – the annual migration of over a million Wildebeest and Zebra as they shake the earth in their quest for food and water. Protruding from the grasslands are rocky outcrops that stand stark and severe against the sky. Feel the spirit of Africa stir your blood as these remarkable plains stretch far away.
