mikumi national park |
|
|
Mikumi is perhaps the most accessible and popular of Tanzania's national parks. The main feature in here is the open grasslands of the Mikumi flood plain which is bordered on two sides by mountain ranges. On the southern end one can spot the yellow baboon, impalas, reedbucks and other antelope.
Some distance to the north are the Hippo Pools dominated by hippo, as well as a variety of water birds.
The area around these pools is open plain where you can see all kinds of game from the Lichtenstein's hartebeest to the somewhat rare wild dog.

Black-bellied bustards, ground hornbills and black turkeys are also found on the plains. There are two other major water holes, Mkata and Chamgore ('place of the python'). Here there are saddle-bill stork, hammerkop, malachite kingfisher and the deadly writhing python.
The pink Jacaranda is one of the most beautiful trees in this part of the park which is dotted by small glades of Hyphaene palm, shady figs and occasional baobab. Many trails lead across black cotton soil which transforms to nightmarish bog during the wet season. On the far eastern side of the plains the black-backed jackal is a common predator - this is one of the few mammal species that mates for life. |

The park cover an area of 3230 sq km. There is a lot of wildlife in this park including elephant, buffalo, giraffe, lions, antelope and over 400 bird species.
Mikumi National Park is the closest
National Park to Dar es Salaam and is nestled between the Uluguru
mountains to the northeast, and the Rubeho mountains, Udzungwa
mountains and Rift Valley escarpment to the south west. As part of
the Selous ecosystem, it benefits from the highest game density of
the entire conservation area.
Not only is Mikumi a great place for
'getting your eye in' on game drives, but it is also a fantastically
colourful place. The open grasslands stretching out before you
change through the spectrum of orange and yellows throughout the
day. There are high concentrations of game, with large herds of
Nyasa Blue Wildebeest, (not found in Ruaha National Park), buffalo,
impala, zebra and giraffe. Where there are large herds, there are
always plenty of predators waiting for dinner. Mikumi was gazetted as a National Park in 1964 and is named after the spindle shaped Borassus palm trees. The Mkata plain supports vast herds of plains game such as wildebeest, impala, zebra and giraffe, hunted by their associated predators; while you are more likely to find Lichtenstein's hartebeest, greater kudu, roan and sable antelope in the surrounding less fertile hills. Although game sightings can never be guaranteed, there are lots of sightings of the African 'wild dog' hunting the plains in packs. |
