THE GARDENS

The luscious gardens, gradually leading down from the Ruins to the beach are home and paradise to many species of butterflies and birds.

Mangroves dot the sea, providing a habitat for jeweled fish and birds including the gorgeous Mangrove Kingfisher.

The garden was conceived in 1991, the vision of a far-sighted conservationist and has since earned a reputation for its plant diversity.

It is now established as a flourishing Botanic Garden which includes over 650 plant species, many of them labeled.

A nature trail winds through the garden and the ruins.

The superb palm collection, totaling over 150 species, includes the Bottle palm, several kinds of Caryota, Sabals, Borassus, Bismarckia, Licualas, Florida Silver and Thatch palms, and perhaps most interesting of all the Dypsis pembana palm, which is endemic to Pemba Island.

The gardens form a haven of peace and tranquillity with quiet corners in which to relax and fully enjoy this unique environment.

Mbweni Ruins Hotel lies on the West Coast, 10 minutes from Stone Town, 10 minutes from the Airport.

Mbweni offers accommodation for no more than 30 guests.

All the rooms are air-conditioned and afford views of the Indian Ocean and the gardens.

The crystal clear fresh water pool on the edge of the beach connects the rooms to the restaurant and bar, where traditional spicy foods and a panoply of seafood delicacies await the discerning diner.

The view from the restaurant sweeps across the Indian Ocean to the islands of Chole, Bawe and Chumbe.

Romantic ruins from the era of Livingstone can be explored in their lush botanic garden environment, and over the years we have striven to provide a personal and discreet service in one of  the most beautiful natural and historic situations in Zanzibar.

Cesare Giacomelli, the genial Manager of the hotel and his wife Anna are always on hand to assist you.

Mbweni Ruins Hotel was proud to win the "Best Partners in Progress" Award from ZIPA in 2004:

THE ROOMS

Mbweni offers thirteen air-conditioned suites, each furnished in distinctive Zanzibari style, with oriental rugs, mosquito nets and four-poster beds, which echo the many cultural flavors that have influenced the Swahili Coast.

Each suite is close to the swimming pool and secluded beach and has a balcony overlooking the sea.

The Baobab Suite is perfect for honeymoons, and for that extra special treat. This spacious suite,

complete with king-sized four-poster bed, has its own rooftop terrace with spectacular views over the ocean,

the ruins and the garden, which is vibrant with the colour of frangipani, hibiscus and oleander.

Friendly staff are on hand to assist with arranging tours,

re-confirming flights and making sure that all guests have a wonderful stay in Zanzibar.

THE POOL AND BEACH

The pool above the white sandy beach with beautiful mangroves swaying with the tide, is a perfect place from which to watch the sun go down.

The Mbweni Ruins are all that remain of St. Mary's School for Girls, which was built in 1874

by English missionaries influenced by David Livingstone.

The school provided an education for the daughters of freed slaves who had been released from captured slave-dhows.

Some were trained to be teachers but the less academic girls were taught cooking and sewing and in 1877 an extra wing was built for them.

The architecture of the school is a typical Zanzibari design, the buildings being focused around a central courtyard.

There is a ruined chapel, where today torchlit dinners conjure up the magical and mystical traditions of Zanzibar

THE RESTAURANT

The Raintree Restaurant offers delicious combinations of International and Zanzibari Cuisine.

We provide a full English breakfast, combined with a buffet of island fruits, yoghurt and cereals,

freshly-squeezed fruit juices and a selection of herbal teas.

For lunch, guests can sample one of our specially prepared salads  or explore the extensive menu.

Our chefs use fresh market produce and seafood specialties from the Indian Ocean.

Our table d’hôte dinner menus include vegetarian options. We are happy to accommodate any special requests.

Mbweni specializes in arranging Weddings—it is hard to imagine a more romantic venue for this purpose

than the candlelit chapel or the beach.
