Mahale National Park lies 120 km south of Kigoma on a peninsula in Lake Tanganyika. Mahale National Park is dominated by the Mahale Mountain chain running from the northwest across the middle of the park. The highest peak is 2462 mts above sea level. Mahale Mountains, like Gombe, are home to some of the last remaining wild chimpanzees and blue monkeys in Africa. According to a recent census, there are more than 700 chimpanzees in about 15 communities. Vegetation is mainly miombo woodland with narrow strips of reverie forest. Mahale National Park supports variety of animal species including elephants, warthogs, giraffes, zebras, roan antelopes, buffaloes, hyenas, wild dogs. Mahale Mountain Park is reached by boat or plane, both of which are available for charter. May to October is the best time to visit. There are no roads and all game viewing is done on foot. Mahale is a unique ecological zone with lowland forest, moist and dry savannah, miombo and open woodlands. Animals range from elephant, buffalo, leopard and primates to roan and sable antelopes, giraffe, kudu, eland, leopard and lion. |
