The boat is fully equipped with deep sea and inshore fishing tackle, electronics and safety equipment for up to four fishermen, and is powered by twin Yamaha engines. The boat is kitted with outriggers and tower, and is designed for trolling along the shelfs and islands and offshore in Mafia's very deep waters. The fishing grounds include Mafia Island, Songo Songo islands, the deep sea crescent east of Mafia, Nyuni and Njovi Islands, and in the channels from the Rufiji Delta south to Lindi. These are thought to be the best game fishing grounds in East Africa, with catches of Sailfish, blue, black and striped marlin, barracuda, wahoo, kingfish, giant trevalley, yellowfin and dog-tooth tuna, dorado, five-fingered jack and rainbow runner, red snapper, rock cod. Light and heavy tackle and fly fishing are offered. The deep sea crescent off Mafia and the Songo Songo Archipelago is potentially one of the most exciting game fishing areas in the world, with expanses of virtually unfished waters that offer a keen challenge to sport fishermen. In 1950 the author Conan Doyle set an all-Africa record for dorado of 34.2 kg that still stands. We believe that Mafia offers many more records but the facilities have not existed before to facilitate the serious fisherman. The main fishing season is from August to March, but fishing for reef species is good all year round along the reefs and channels. July to November is the main tuna season with large yellowfin, dog-toothed tuna and bonito; we also expect kingfish, wahoo, trevalley, cobia, rainbow runner and sharks. From December to March the billfish run, and this is when Mafia is best for sailfish. "ALFAJIRI" is offered for day fishing and as a charter boat supported with camping equipment for trips to more remote destinations lasting more than a day, where we stay in canvas tents on the beach, supported by a team of catering staff. For the serious and determined game fisherman we can camp on the north end of Mafia and fish the very deep drops off Ras Mkumbi, across to the songo Songo islands. The MAFIA CHANNEL FISHING TOURNAMENT takes place in the New Year each year, and is organised by KINASI, which is a member of the International Game Fish Association and the Game Fish Union of Africa. It provides a high standard of accommodation in only twelve bungalows (one is a family unit with two bedrooms), each with a large verandah and ensuite bathroom. The bungalows have been constructed in rendered concrete block, with palm-leaf (makuti) roofs, and concrete foundations and floors. There is a small single supplement. For non-divers there will be snorkeling, excursions and wind surfing as alternative activities. The minimum for this offer is two people. The diving includes all equipment provided by KINASI and boat services. Non-divers have a choice of any other activities, such as picnics, day trips for snorkeling, safaris to Chuvia bay and Mlola Forest, excursions to villages and local markets. KINASI has laser sailboats and wind-surfers available free for guests and an excellent swimming pool. We arrange the air charter from Zanzibar direct to Mafia. The cost of all air and road transfers is included in the package cost. For the adventurer we also offer a two- or three-night sea safari to the islands south of Mafia to scuba dive, snorkel and fish in the isolated islands. We camp and live on the beaches using specially designed tents. These safaris are arranged for groups of six to twelve. SCUBA DIVING AND SNORKELING AT ITS' BEST Mafia Island and its reefs are renown as an excellent, World-class diving destination. Scientists have confirmed that Mafia has some of the richest reefs in the World, with an unparalleled variety of hard and soft corals and diversity of tropical fish. We have identified fabulous dive sites from Mafia to Kilwa offering shallow reefs of immense beauty and richness, bommies, channels, walls and caves, drift and night dives. These are new sites and we have years of exploration to do. KINASI offers great diving for advanced and novice divers in safety under professional instruction. We take great snacks and picnic lunches aboard our dive boats and stay out for two-tank dives or, after diving, enjoy the rest of the day with a visit to other islands or historic and interesting sites. The snorkeling on the shallow reefs surrounding the many islands in and around Chole Bay is a great attraction for non-divers and divers alike. Adventure dives (night, wall, reef and drift dives) are regular features of an active diving programme. For groups of up to twelve guests a cruise can be planned to take in the marvellous destinations of Ras Mkumbi, Forbes Bay, Kitutia Reef, Okuza and Nyuni Islands and the reef complex surrounding Songo Songo and Njovi islands. These safaris offer superb diving and snorkeling over exquisite coral gardens in excellent visibility, and have rarely been dived. Trained diving assistants handle all equipment, help divers and check their equipment, so that you are free to enjoy the dives and all other activities during each day. We use Dacor buoyancy vests, Apeks demand valves and Faber cylinders and employ rigid safety and maintenance standards. We buddy divers carefully to ensure similar standards and interests and all diving is preceded by briefings and checks, to ensure maximum enjoyment. The disturbance or removal of any form of marine life is prohibited and we use boat engines of low horsepower to minimize pollution, and sail the dhow whenever possible. We have been assisting marine research for over six years and hope that all our guests will benefit from the accumulated knowledge and the conservation programmes underway. ISLAND LIFE CAMPING SAFARIS KINASI offers one to three-night camping trips to the northern tip of Mafia (Ras Mkumbi) and to the islands and reefs south of Mafia, visiting Kitutia, Okuza, Nyuni and Fanjove. Here we camp on the beaches and snorkel, dive and fish in splendid isolation. This is a wonderful escape for visitors who are staying a week or more. It is a unique opportunity in East Africa and gives intrepid visitors the chance to dive and snorkel reefs that are never visited by divers. We have experienced some of our most dramatic and interesting diving on these southern reefs and there is both challenging and easy diving along shelves and walls. The cost is US$ 250 per person per night, with everything included, food, boats, diving and snorkeling. We have a maximum group size of twelve and a minimum of six. Accommodation is in two-man tents we designed and made especially for beach camping, but usually we sleep out under the stars on our comfortable bedrolls.
		The intention has been to create a resort that is relaxing and stylish, with a very personal feel. KINASI is beautifully furnished with antiques and hand-crafted furniture, made for us to our own designs. The dining room is appointed with crockery and hand-blown glassware made specially for us and there are original works of art by East African artists. Catering is based upon local seafood: fresh fish, prawns, crab, lobster, octopus and calamari, with fresh vegetables and fruit flown from the mainland.
	Breads, rolls, pizzas and variety of yoghurts, preserves and sauces are all home made, from traditional recipes. Seafood barbecues and Swahili cuisine are established KINASI customs. Most of all there is tranquility and privacy in beautiful, natural surroundings, and our friendly staff will do their best to look after you with service to your rooms, morning tea and coffee with fresh biscuits and cakes, sundowners and cocktails, delicious food and attention to any requests you may have.
		KINASI started as a private home, and that is how we wish our guests to feel - as if they are in their own home. 	THE DIVE SITES Chole Bay is blessed with a number of excellent dives within the Bay, ensuring diving in almost any weather, as well as easy access. Visibility varies with the wind and tides, and is generally poor on outgoing tides as there is the normal accumulation of organic and granular matter in the water. The diving is tide-dependent for this reason and also to avoid strong currents at the dive sites which are close to the mouth of the Bay (Kinasi Pass). We usually dive on the full low, full high or on the incoming tide for the Kinasi Pass drift dive and the Chole and Kinsai walls. Diving outside the Bay is subject to weather conditions and tides, as it can be dangerous to negotiate Kinasi Pass on an outgoing tide; however, once outside the Bay the dives are not tide dependent. Almost all Mafia Islands best diving is at depths of less than 30m so it is a sport diver's paradise. The reefs of the archipelago offer a staggeringly beautiful and varied display of marine life. The excellent condition and high diversity of the reefs stimulated the creation of Mafia Island Marine Park, Tanzania's first marine park. Examples of most kinds of tropical marine habitat occur here, including exposed fringing reefs, rock walls, soft coral and algae-dominated reefs. The diversity of animal and plant life is hard to match, with over 50 genera of corals and 400 species of fish so far identified; many more still await determination. There are excellent examples of giant table corals, delicate seafans, whip corals, and huge stands of blue-tipped staghorn corals. Large predatory fish and turtles are common and surprisingly unaffected by approaching divers. We are indebted to FRONTIER Tanzania for some of the information in the text which follows. This is not included in the rates above. Kinasi usually prepays this for you and we add the fees to your invoice and this service can be arranged prior to arrival of guests in Mafia. We prefer to pay the fees on behalf of guests to avoid the usual problems of ?We have no change. * KINASI'S rates include accommodation, meals, tea/coffee, laundry, use of windsurfers and lasers, transfers to/from the airport in Mafia and applicable government taxes. They do not include activities (e.g. scuba diving, snorkeling, excursions), flights to/from Mafia, airport taxes, bar services and other personal expenses. * KINASI closes after Easter each year and opens again on June 1st. ROAD TRANSFERS Our rates do not include the road transfer from Mafia airport to Kinasi Lodge which we usually outsource to provide income for local small businesses. This is charged at Euro 15 per person one-way. FLIGHTS Mafia has daily scheduled air services with same-day connections to the Ruaha, Selous, Arusha, Pemba and Zanzibar; all flights can be booked direct or through Kinasi, which can make flight arrangements and invoice you as part of the overall bill. Coastal Aviation flies every day at 1500 hrs with a direct connection on its aircraft from Arusha via Zanzibar and the Selous. Prices are: DSM-MAF US$ 130 per person one way ZNZ-MAF US$ 170 per person one way SEL-MAF US$ 270 per person one way ARU-MAF US$ 310 per person one way Tropical Air operates the morning schedule to Mafia leaving Dar es Salaam at 1000 with a direct connection from Zanzibar. This is an excellent service for arrivals on British Airways. The seat prices are as for Coastal. Kinasi has its own light aircraft (a Cessna 6-seater and 14-seater Caravan) and charters additional aircraft as required to ensure guests can fly directly from Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar or the Selous (and other destinations on request) to Mafia if the scheduled flights do not fit client itineraries. Seat prices on Kinasi's aircraft are: DSM-MAF 120 per person one way ZNZ-MAF 150 per person one way SEL-MAF 210 per person one way Kinasi through its partner Sky Aviation - also offers a very competitive charter service to any destination in Tanzania with its aircraft (from 6 seat to 14 seat capacity aircraft).
