1. Leven Bank: 18 - 30 metres (diving maximum). |
||
|
Exciting spot for experienced divers. Spectacular dive, often in strong currents in the Pemba Channel. |
||
|
Big top reef, sandy top, clusters of coral. |
||
|
Big game fish , tuna, trevally, king fish, barracudas, wrasses, big moray eels and large schools of reef fish. |
||
|
2. Nankivell: 15 metres. |
||
|
A large clump of coral surrounded by a sandy bottom; good for novice and experienced divers. |
||
|
Can only be dived on specific tides. Large coral formation. |
||
|
Lots of game fish, small reef sharks; good variety of reef fish, crayfish. |
||
|
3. Hunga Reefs: 12 - 18 metres. |
||
|
Four clumps of coral fairly close to each other; good for novice and experienced divers. Can only be dived |
||
|
on specific tides. |
||
|
Beautiful fan corals and soft corals. |
||
|
Schools of pickhandle barracuda and batfish, crocodile fish, blue spotted stingrays, moorish idols, |
||
|
surgeon and unicorn fish, stone fish, scorpion fish. |
||
|
4. Mbwangawa: 10 - 20 metres. |
||
|
Coral reef, situated near to Nungwi's lighthouse; good for novice and experienced divers. |
||
|
Beautiful sheet coral, soft corals. |
||
|
Rays, moray eels, occasionally banded snake eels; look out for juvenile emperor angel fish. |
||
|
Occasional reef shark. |
||
|
5. Kichafi: 8 - 16 metres. |
||
|
Coral reef, suitable for novice and experienced divers; - being less than 5 minutes from |
||
|
Ras Nungwi Beach Resort, this a good spot for night dives - experience level dictates. |
||
|
Plate and staghorn coral, large sheet coral formations. |
||
|
Wrasse, snapper, moray eels and many different types of reef fish; sometimes rays and turtles. |
||
|
A great dive for observing smaller marine life too. |
||
|
6. Leon's Wall: 5 - 30 metres (diving maximum) |
||
| Wall dive with several caves; suitable for experienced divers only. Variety of coral types. | ||
| Lion fish, snappers, big bass and leaf fish; occasionally, big game fish and dolphins are sighted; in | ||
|
September, humpback whales are sometimes seen at the surface. The top reef is suitable for snorkelling. |
||
| 7. Mnemba Coral Garden: 5 - 18 metres. | ||
| Large clumps of coral west of Mnemba Atoll; suitable for novice and experienced divers | ||
| Different coral formations, particularly big fan formations, recommended. | ||
| Snow flake eels, garden eels, many different tropical reef fish; sometimes small reef sharks, game fish, | ||
| kingfish, barracudas and regular sitings of turtles. | ||
|
8. Kichwani: 3 - 30 metres. |
||
|
Nice shallow drop-off, suitable for novice and experienced divers. Big fan corals. |
||
|
Variety of tropical reef fish and often game fish. Schools of dolphins are often seen near or at this dive |
||
|
site. Big schools of snappers, sweetlips and big-eyes (amongst others) are a feature of this dive site. |
||
|
9. Watabomi: 12 - 22 metres. |
||
|
Coral reef; suitable for novice and experienced divers. |
||
| Many coral heads (predominantly brain coral).Variety of tropical reef fish and often game fish. | ||
|
Leaf fish, powder blue surgeon fish, peppered moray eels and turtles are common. |
||
| 10. The Big Wall: 16 - 30 metres (diving maximum). | ||
|
Located on Mnemba's east side, signifying the start of the Pemba Channel. Rapid |
||
|
descent down to 30 metres and then vertical wall of coral with many overhangs, for experienced divers only. |
||
|
A must for avid divers. Can only be dived when tides are favourable and waters calm. |
||
|
Many big predators including reef shark. Also many game fish and regular sitings of big |
||
|
rays and tuna. Seasonal sitings of whale sharks. |
||
|
Blue spotted eagle rays are often sighted. |
||
