HATARI! - THE MOVIE
In the year 1960, the former Tanganyika, now Tanzania, hosted the production of the classic Hollywood movie, “Hatari !”, by Howard Hawks.
Hardy Krüger, a young fair-haired German actor, co-starred with John Wayne as a member of a professional group of men, who captured wild animals for a living.
In Willis jeeps and Dodge trucks, they raced over the open savannah around Lake Manyara and the Ngorongoro Crater, catching rhinos, giraffes and other large mammals, destined for zoos all over the world.
The film portrays an era when capturing wild animals, in complete contrast to today, was still big business amongst the rough and tough heroes living all over Africa.
At the end of the film, which is almost three hours long, three baby elephants progress clumsily and excitedly through Arusha, which was then still a small, calm and quiet town.
SUGGESTED STAY AT HATARI! Day 1: Option: Arrival at Kilimanjaro airport and transfer by road through the Arusha National Park to Hatari Lodge. (This transfer takes 1 hour) Upon arrival at Hatari Lodge, light dinner before retiring for the 1st night in Africa between Africa’s two dominant mountains: Mt Meru and Kilimanjaro.
Option: Arrival from Nairobi or Dar es Salaam or actually off your safari Arrival for tea/coffee and cake at Hatari Lodge in the afternoon.
Depending on the arrival time, sundowners either at the lodge on the wooden platform within the Momella meadow and view on Kilimanjaro or at the Momella lakes with hippopotamus, wetland water birds, ducks and flamingos. Dinner and overnight at Hatari Lodge.
Day 2: Early morning wake up by the striking sunlight red panorama of Mt Meru stretching along your window. A quick cup of coffee and muffins before leaving with the safari lodge vehicle to the fragile montane forest on the slopes of Mt Meru. We drive up to the Tululisia viewing point before walking a few hours to the crater floor at 2,400 m. The damp misty atmosphere rich of mosses, ferns, orchids, fire lilies and lichens takes you to a fantasy world beyond your imagination. We return to the viewing point for a hot brunch prepared by our mountain team – from here we have a good view on the mountain, the remainder of the park including Momella Lakes, and the snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro beyond.
We drive back to the lodge for an afternoon siesta, tea/coffee and cake. The late afternoon is free at leisure. Dinner and overnight at Hatari Lodge.
Day 3: Full day game drive in the National Park to Ngurdoto Crater reaching Buffalo Viewpoint before midday. From here we have an excellent view over and into Ngurdoto Crater and the sun light volcanic walls of Mt. Meru. To watch Colobus and Sykes monkey waking up on their favourite night resting branches is quiet common. The crater floor, home to herds of buffalo, giraffe, warthog as well as elephant is a reserve within a reserve. To nature’s advantage, humans are not allowed on the floor however due to the walls not being as steep as Ngorongoro you can easily look into the crater and watch all the animal movements with your naked eye. For the active we walk along the crater rim to the northern side with great views on Kilimanjaro. Here a picnic lunch is served. We return via Little Serengeti with zebras and bushbuck ever common to Hatari Lodge for afternoon tea/coffee and cake.
Day 4: After a leisurely breakfast you will meet your safari guide who shall take you to your next destination in Tanzania.

Hatari Lodge is located at one of Africa’s most beautiful and diverse national parks, where the famous Mt.Kilimanjaro rises majestically 5,892 metres into the blue skies above.
Hatari Lodge is situated at a malaria free altitude above 5.000 ft on the northern edge of Arusha National Park, with its unspoilt views of lakes and craters, its magical rain forests, and the 4,566 metre high dormant volcano Mount Meru, rising elegantly in the background.
At the very heart of this “luxury bush hotel”, managed by Marlies and Jörg Gabriel, are the traditional farm buildings, which were used by the legendary actor Hardy Krüger, and his former manager, Jim Mallory |

Originally, the property was known as the Ngongongare Farm, belonging to the Trappe family, and was later used as the setting for the classic movie “Hatari”, starring John Wayne.
Hardy Krüger bought the property in 1960. He wanted a farm in Africa – a dream came true, for 17 years!
Hardy Krüger’s former home was transformed much later into the small and privately managed Ol Donyo Orok Lodge, which closed in 2002. Today this house is part of Hatari Lodge, and is inhabited by the Gabriel family. |
|
|
Jim Mallory’s former house is now the main building of Hatari Lodge.
The name was chosen in memory of the classic Hollywood movie “Hatari”, parts of which were filmed in the immediate surrounding areas.
Hatari Lodge consists of three buildings beautifully situated within acacia woodland allowing excellent views onto the Momella meadow rich with wildlife and across to the majestic Kilimanjaro. |

The oldest building
serves as a large central living and dining room. Here you will find
comfortable relaxation and dining areas, where guests will enjoy
Jonathans' delicious five star cuisine. Sitting around the open fireplace, which Krüger and Mallory enjoyed so much, we will entertain guests with inside information on the flora, fauna and history of Arusha Nationalpark. Here, you will also find a long bar, which can be accessed from both in-and outside, as well as a small, but informative library. The breakfast terrace, bordered by sweet smelling acacias, offers impressive views of Mt. Meru and Kilimanjaro. |
|
|
Directly below the terrace, lies the Momella clearing, which can also be reached via a boardwalk. A viewing platform offers the opportunity to watch animals from close by, and to enjoy classic sundowners, with Kilimanjaro in the background. Every day buffaloes and waterbuck feed here. Warthogs dig around in the ground or mow the lawn, waterbirds enjoy the swampy areas and numerous giraffes come to visit at the doors of the lodge. |

Depending on the season, elephants make their way into the meadow, and on moon lit nights, with a little bit of luck, leopards, genets and civets may be seen. In the trees around the lodge, there are bush babies almost 365 nights of the year. A “Hippo Pool”, a small lake inhabited permanently by hippos, is within walking distance.
“Hatari” offers 8 comfortably furnished rooms, each with an open fireplace and a spacious bathroom en suite. Each room has been lovingly furnished and decorated by Marlies in the modern retro style, giving tribute to the 60’s and 70’s - the time of "Hatari!" and the beginning of safaris in Tanzania. |
