Shopping

Dar es Salaam is a treasure-trove for connoisseurs of art. Makonde carvings, TingaTinga paintings, bead, bone and malachite jewellery, baskery, spices, colourful wrap-arounds called 'kanga' and 'kitenge', batik and brassware are most popular and excellent buys.

 

The rare and brilliant Tanzanite gemstone found only in Tanzania, makes a precious souvenir. At Mwenge Village, Nyerere Cultural Center and Samora Avenue, handicrafts are available at reasonable prices.

 

 

Entry Requirements

Visas are required for all visitors coming to Tanzania (Except East Africans).

 

Visas can obtained at the point of entry for all nationalities except those from West African Countries, Iran, Lebanon, Iraq, Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan.

 

Visa requirements can be changed at any time.

We therefore suggest that the traveler contact a Tanzanian Embassy or Consulate prior to departure to Tanzania.

Economy

The national currency of Tanzania is the Tanzanian Shilling.

 

Main export goods are coffee, cotton, sisal, tea, cashews, tobacco, diamonds, and gold.

 

Electrical Current Tanzania operates on a voltage of 220/230 volts AC.

 

Local Time Tanzania is three hours ahead of GMT.

 
 

Climate

Situated on the East coast of Africa, Dar es Salaam enjoys a hot and humid climate with an average daily temperature of 30C (86F).The monsoon season, known as the long rains, occurs from March to May.

 

Government & Society

Tanzania is a republic whose capital city is in Dodoma. The total of the Tanzanian population is 29 million, out of which approximately 1 million lives in Dar Es Salaam.

 

Tanzania's official languages are English and Swahili besides that various native African languages are spoken.

Business

Banking hours: Monday to Friday from 8:30 - 12:30 hr. and from 13:00 to 16:00 and on Saturdays from 08:30 to 11:30 hr. Some banks are also opened on Sundays from 09:00 to 11:30 hr.

 

Shops: Monday until Saturday 09:00 to 12:00 hr. and from 14:00 - 17:00 hr. A few exceptions will have longer opening hours and are also opened on Sundays.

 

Tips: In hotels and restaurants it is customary to reward good services with a tip of 10%.

 

Sports

Visitors can attend a wide variety of competitive sports such as cricket, soccer, rugby, tennis, squash and golf.

 

Swimming, snorkeling, fishing and sailing head the list of active sports.
